Until it Reflects THE SCIENCE
The 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines are headed in the wrong direction.
That's why we're launching a social media video campaign to tell the real stories of everyday Americans who have turned their health around essentially by ignoring the guidelines' advice.
We need your help
Post a video on social media and ask three of your friends to join you!
See Instructions BelowThe Problem:
The expert report by the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC) was just released and once again, it’s basically the same advice, based on weak science that ignores a great deal of rigorous evidence to the contrary. Specifically, the DGAC recommends:
- A 10% cap on saturated fat, which ignores the last decade of science on this topic.
- Emphasizing fruits, vegetables, whole grains, seeds, nuts, legumes, vegetable oils, reduced-fat dairy while reducing red and processed meats.
- Altogether, 50-55% of calories from carbohydrates
Also, the DGAC ignored:
- All trials on weight loss
- All studies on low-carb diets.
You might also be interested to know that:
- Quite a few of the reviews ended their systematic reviews of the literature in 2016 or even earlier;
- The evidence base for the majority of recommendations does not include or account for race/ethnicity of people of low socio-economic status—who are the people most in need of reliable, relevant advice.
And crucially, the Dietary Guidelines is once again designed only for healthy Americans, thereby excluding the 60% of the us with a diet-related disease.
It’s also a problem for all the doctors, nutritionists, and other healthcare professionals who only get educated on the official Dietary Guidelines and therefore don’t know about any other dietary options.
We only have a short window of time during which Congress to try to fix some of these problems. Congress goes on recess in early August. Let’s reach them before then and ask them to #DelaytheDGA until the most rigorous and recent science is considered.
The 2020-2025 Guidelines are due out later this year.
