Dear friends of the Nutrition Coalition!
I’m excited to invite you to the first-ever rally for metabolic health in Washington D.C. on October 13th! I’ll be speaking alongside renowned experts like Robert Lustig, Georgia Ede, Chris Palmer, Eric Westman, Tony Hampton, Vinnie Tortorich, and more. Together, we’ll make history by demanding a decisive shift in how our country addresses chronic disease and mental health. The rally will take place at the Sylvan National Theater, near the Washington Monument, from 3:30-4:45 PM.
This is a critical moment to push for policies that will help reverse chronic disease, including a complete reform of the U.S. Dietary Guidelines and a healthcare system that addresses the root causes of disease—not just the symptoms.
As many of you know, I’ve spent years advocating for evidence-based changes to the Dietary Guidelines to ensure they heal, not harm, the health of Americans. But after countless efforts, I’ve realized there are limits to what can be accomplished by participating in the official process.
Over the past 8 years, the Nutrition Coalition has organized experts to testify at meetings of the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. We’ve mobilized experts on saturated fats, leading to a landmark review paper that debunked long-standing myths. These experts met with Members of Congress and top USDA-HHS officials. We also rallied tens of thousands of individuals to contact Congress and submit comments during the official 2020 guidelines’ process, but despite a groundswell of support for low-carbohydrate diets–the topic had more public comments than any other–our input was largely dismissed.
We worked with Congress to allocate $2 million for four reports from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM), which made 11 recommendations to USDA to make the guidelines more rigorous and transparent. Yet, the USDA failed to fully implement even one of those recommendations.
I also co-authored, together with former members of previous Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committees, a rigorous critique published in a journal of NASEM. Instead of addressing our concerns, the USDA labeled it “misinformation."
It’s become clear that the system isn’t budging, despite the overwhelming scientific evidence we’ve provided. That’s why I believe it’s time to raise our voices and demand real change. While our work at the Nutrition Coalition has laid a strong foundation establishing the lack of rigor in the guidelines process, we need to take the next step and demand reform.
Join me in making this rally a pivotal moment in the fight for metabolic health! For more information, visit metabolicrevolution.org.
My very best,
Nina
